A friend of mine, contributing author Rosemary Drisdelle found the following article on Rhinosporidium (see link below), but is basically an aquatic parasite. It was originally thought to be a protozoan parasite, but has been classified as a fungus.
Rhinosporidium can infect nasal mucosa and conjunctiva of humans and animals. It produces tumor-like massses, and may result in nasal polyps.
Attempts to grow Rhinosporidium on artificial media have been unsuccessful. Detection is usually made by microscopic examination of tissue, or molecular amplification (PCR).
I'd be interested to know what your interest in Rhinosporidium derives from.
