Did you see that botulism has been killing water birds in the Great Lakes since July? Reports state that it's type E botulism and that it is also harmful to humans, but I'm ssuming that it's not the type that we usually see in human outbreaks?

Great Article Rosemary! It begs the question...can humans become infected by eating the contaminated fish and/or birds? I would think the answer to both may be yes...I'm going to stay away from Great Lakes sushi!

Yes! I did come across warnings to fishers and hunters that birds and fish - particularly those that appear at all unwell - may contain the toxin. I suppose common sense should reign: if there are dead or dying fish and/or birds in the area, don't hunt and fish.
