The decision by Texas to make HPV vaccination mandatory in schoolgirls prior to entering grade 6 seems to be drawing support.

An editorial in the NY Times on February 6 supports the decision of mandatory HPV vaccination in young girls, congratulating Governor Rick Perry of Texas for issuing the order. The author of the editorial emphasizes the point that the vaccine, in all likelihood, won't work after a woman has been infected and supports the advisory committee of immunization's recommendation that vaccine should be given to girls 11 and 12 years old, hopefully well before their first sexual experience.

The author acknowledges that parents may be opposed to compulsory immunization, but notes that parents can seek an exemption based on conscience or religious beliefs.
