Sanitation Deficiencies

Numerous sanitation deficiencies in Newfoundland slaughterhouses concern health inspectors.

I was in St. John’s, Newfoundland last week teaching and noticed an article in the local newspaper The Telegram titled Abattoirs speak out. The article described concern by some local slaughterhouse owners to an earlier series of news stories revealing health concerns in Newfoundland slaughterhouses.

There are 34 provincially licensed slaughterhouses in Newfoundland: 4 slaughterhouses were shut down following review by health inspectors and 14 others were given one-time temporary licences and 6 months to correct deficiencies.

It is believed that many of the deficiencies have now been corrected, but slaughterhouse owners are concerned that negative publicity may affect their businesses.
