As of September 16, 2006, the number of E. coli 0157 cases reported to the CDC attributed to contaminated fresh bagged spinach has increased to 102.


The number of reported cases of E. coli 0157 illness attributed to contaminated fresh bagged spinach has increased from 94 to 102 (September 16, 2006). Half of these individuals required hospitalisation, 16% developed hemolytic-uremic syndrome. A 77-year-old Wisconsin woman is the only fatality involved in the outbreak.

Canadian and Mexican consumers are also warned that spinach may have been sold in stores in those areas as well. If you purchased spinach or spinach-containing salads prior to the recall, check the country of origin to determine whether the produce originated in the U.S. If so, discard it, or ensure that it is thoroughly cooked before consuming.

The FDA continues to identify and recall brands of spinach and salad mixes containing spinach that may be involved in the outbreak.The list of brands that may be affected include Natural Selection Foods, Pride of San Juan, Earthbound Farm, Bellissima, Dole, Rave Spinach, Emeril, Sysco, O Organic, Fresh Point, River Ranch, Superior, Nature's Basket, Pro-Mark, Compliments, Trader Joe's, Ready Pac, Jansal Valley, Cheney Brothers, Coastline, D'Arrigo Brothers, Green Harvest, Mann, Mills Family Farm, Premium Fresh, Snoboy, The Farmer's Market, Tanimura & Antle, President's Choice, Cross Valley, and Riverside Farms.
